THE INDIFFERENT ATTITUDE OF WOMEN TOWARDS POLITICS
What is Politics? How do you understand the term Politics? Politics they say “is a game of intelligence”. Others ventilate their sentiment on the bases that Politics is very ‘Dark and Dirty’. Upon contemplating on the conceptual term: “Politics”, we believe that to LEAD is to be in LEADERSHIP. And hence, we say politics is a venture, a game, and a place of LEADERSHIP.
But having interviewed a couple of substantial political figures in Ghana, divergent personal understanding and views came as a result of years on political practice. In an interview with Madam Eva Loko, the Aspiring Member of Parliament for Klottey-Kolley Consistuency, she strongly claims based on political experience that ‘Politics’ is not ‘Dark’, neither is it not ‘Dirty’, but rather ‘UNPLEASANT’. She strategically prefers to use the word ‘UNPLEASANT’ to define politics. From the mind of the expertise, the unpleasant nature of politics is as a result of ‘insults’ and ‘corruption’. Madam Eva revealed that the intensive attitude towards character assassination with respect to ‘name calling’ and untruthful statement crafted against people is practically what makes politics very ‘UNPLEASANT’.
She then discloses that some men and women after winning political offices turn to be corrupt in their political dealings and movement on the throne causing politics to be seen from a negative eye and with a hostile heart – CORRUPTION DUE TO ATTITUDINAL CHANGES and VALUES COMPROMISED.
On the other hand, Shirley Ayorkoe, the MP for Weija Consistuency and Parliamentary Candidate for Sowutuom Constituency in an interview expressed that politics is a game of words used for or against each other through the mechanism of Propaganda without any verification of authenticity or proof to win political power.
From our won lenses, we have observed that keenly that the ratio of the current population in Ghana has on record that the women are more than the men. So this brings us to a very sensitive question as to why we have more men in politics than women. We want to ascertain the reason for which; WOMEN HAVE AN
INDIFFERENT ATTITUDE TOWARDS POLITICS, WHY?
All these political folks had their personal understanding to the subject in question. In an attempt to zero in on the subject at hand, we intend to highlight and annotate the key revelations brought on board by these professional political figures. To start with, Hon. Linda Sey and Madam Eva Loko had one voice regarding a particular sentiment which is CRITICISMS. According to both of them, criticisms serves as one of the pillars or reasons for which women don’t venture into politics as compared to man. Madam Eva Loko disclosed on record that the ‘name-calling’, character assassination, insults and slanderous tongue are what take the interest and beauty of politics out of women, hence women developing an indifferent attitude towards politics. But we ask ourselves; don’t men also face the same criticisms in politics? If they do, what exactly stops women from entering the political venture? The answer from these two female politicians considered the fact that ‘Men have a strong will power’ than women. So that serves as the bases for which men still remain in this ‘game’ while women shiver-off.
The other reason that serves as an impediment or a stumbling block for which women have an indifferent attitude towards politics is ‘TRADITION’. Tradition as revealed by the National Chairman for PPP and the Aspiring MP for Klottey-Kolley Constituency, Hon. Nii Allotey Brew Hammond and Madam Eva Loko respectively was acceded upon as a strong grounds for this sad reality. They both disclosed and agreed to the fact that the tradition of having to respect men in all areas; whether at home, in school, at the work place, et cetera and relegating women to the back in all things is what has contributed to women not developing the boldness to embark on such missions. They believe that women are treated from childhood as species whose job is to be in the kitchen, and to handle all domestic works. While men are given the priority and respect to be educated and learned which then gives them more exposures and experiences in things regarding academics and leadership. This traditional attitude of having misplaced priority when it comes to the female gender is what has largely caused most women now be satisfied with mediocre stuffs but not respect highly political ambitions.
